5 Things to Ask Before You Lock In Your Wedding Venue

Let’s be honest: picking a wedding venue is exciting, but also kind of overwhelming. You scroll through photos, read glowing reviews, fall in love with a space—and then, boom. You realise you have no idea what actually comes with it.

Before you hand over a deposit, it’s worth asking a few questions. Not the obvious ones like “Is it available?” or “How much does it cost?”—those are givens. We’re talking about the details that actually affect your day.

Whether you're thinking of somewhere grand and historic like The Sessions House in Spalding, or something low-key and local, here’s what you really want to know.

1. What does the hire include, exactly?

Some venues include everything. Others give you four walls and a hope. You need to ask.

Do they provide tables, chairs, lighting? Will there be a team on the day? Or are you expected to sort that?

Also, can you bring in your own people (caterers, DJs, florists), or do you have to use their list? Some places are flexible. Others, not so much.

Get it in writing. Trust us on this one.

2. How many people will comfortably fit in the wedding venue?

Yes, the capacity might say 120—but is that for dinner, or just standing around with a drink?

You want to know how the space feels when it’s full. Can people move around? Is there room for a dance floor? Where does the bar go? These things matter more than you’d think. Ask to see photos or even a layout plan. Better yet, visit during a set-up if you can.

3. What’s off-limits?

Some venues come with a few house rules. Others come with a whole book. Can you decorate how you want? Hang things? Light candles? Bring your dog?

And what about the party—can it go late, or is there a cut-off? Some places will let you dance until 1am. Others want the music off by 10:30 sharp.

Also worth asking: is there a corkage fee if you bring your own booze?

4. What’s the plan if the weather turns?

Planning something outdoors? You’ll need a back-up. Ask if there’s a covered option—or better, an indoor plan that still looks nice. Nobody wants to end up in a random marquee that feels like plan Z.

Don’t just ask if there’s a wet weather option. Ask how it works. Can it be decided on the day? Is it extra?

5. How long do we get the space for?

You might assume you have the venue all day. You might not.

Some places give you access the night before. Others let you in at 9am on the dot, and want everything cleared out by midnight.

It’s also worth checking:

  • Can suppliers come early?

  • Do you need to clean up yourselves?

  • Can you leave things overnight?

Trust us: knowing these details early saves stress later.

Final thought

Booking a venue isn’t just about finding the prettiest spot. It’s about knowing how it works behind the scenes. Ask questions, be nosy, and don’t feel weird about asking twice.

Your venue is the base of your whole day—get this right, and everything else falls into place a lot more easily.
